Factory labourer risks 3-year imprisonment for stealing car battery

Oche Joseph, a factory worker, has been arraigned at the Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly stealing a car battery valued at N25, 000, in Lagos.
Joseph, 31, resides at new garage area of Mende,  Maryland, Lagos, and was charged on a two-count for conspiracy and stealing.
The Police Prosecutor Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the accused person committed the offences at No. 1, Salami St, Mende, Maryland, on October 31.
National Daily learnt that the complainant, Mrs Mojisola Salami, had reported the matter at Anthony Police Station on October 31.
Ihiehie further explained that the complainant, was said to have been told that while in her house,  the accused and another man still at large secretly opened her car and stole the battery valued at N25, 000.
He reiterated that while carrying out the act, they were oblivious that the security guard opposite her house was watching when they were removing the battery.
“He moved in and apprehended the accused while the other accomplice ran away.”
The offences which contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 411 recommends two years for conspiracy.
Though the accused pleaded not guilty, the Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, granted him bail in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties whose addresses must be verified and adjourned the case until January 29, 2018for hearing.
