A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and prominent socio-political activist, Aisha Yesufu, has issued a strong warning against the possibility of the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accepting a vice-presidential slot in the 2027 general election.

In a video currently circulating widely on social media, Yesufu vowed to actively oppose any presidential ticket that features Obi as a running mate, insisting that the former Anambra State governor should only contest as a presidential candidate.

According to her, Obi remains one of the most credible and competent figures among the opposition aspirants and deserves to lead rather than play a subordinate role. She argued that repeatedly positioning the most qualified candidates as deputies reflects a deeper problem within Nigeria’s political culture.

“I’m giving you people my word,” Yesufu said in the video. “If Peter Obi emerges as a running mate to anyone, I will work against that ticket. In my little capacity, I will work against them, even if I don’t support any other candidate. Why are we always asking the best to be the second?”

Her comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly within the ADC, which has been adopted by a coalition of opposition leaders seeking to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Peter Obi, who recently aligned with the ADC following the coalition talks, is reportedly one of several aspirants interested in securing the party’s presidential ticket.

However, there are strong indications that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may emerge as the party’s flagbearer.

Speculation has also intensified that Atiku could consider Obi as his running mate if he clinches the ADC ticket, a scenario that has sparked debate among opposition supporters and political stakeholders.

Yesufu’s position adds to the growing pressure from Obi’s supporters, who insist that the former governor should not settle for a vice-presidential role after his strong showing in the 2023 election.

The development further underscores the complexities and internal negotiations shaping opposition strategies as the 2027 race gradually gathers momentum.
