At the end of the second world war in 1945, the US and the Soviet Union became increasingly referred to as the superpowers due to their economic, military and diplomatic powers across the globe.

However, after the demise of the USSR in 1991, the US stood as the the sole recognized world superpower according to many analysts. However, by the turn of the 21st century, the speculations surrounding the status of the US as the most powerful nation in the world has grown. Consequently, some experts have predicted a possibility of the US losing its status as the world superpower due to its declining international influence, and the emergence of other power nations.

In fact, in 2012 the National Intelligence Council Global Trends report predicted that Asia would surpass north America and Europe combined in terms of global power; based on population size, military spending and advancement in technology by 2030. Currently, perhaps these predictions may already be happening, as some countries have caught up or even overtaken the US in terms of technological advancement, economy, military strength and international influence. Although, the US still boasts of the world’s most powerful military.

However, among others, these 5 countries have been widely acclaimed as potential future superpowers. See them below;

1. China

China’s president Xi Jinping

China is notable for its large population size (first in the world) and of recent, its leading strides in technological advancement. China’s economy is also the 2nd largest in the world just behind the US. Estimated at 2.3million, China’s standing military troop is the largest in the world, also having the second largest defense budget in the world. In many experts views, China is most likely to emerge as the next world’s superpower, upstaging the US. However, what would a world with China as superpower be like?

2. Russia

Russia president Vladimir Putin

In terms of foreign relations, Russia and US have often times been at loggerheads.

However, with its military strength, economy and wealth, Russia is often considered as a potential successor to the US, in becoming the world’s superpower.

3. India
