Gov. Makinde presents certificate and staff of office to New Alaafin of Oyo amid controversy

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Monday, officially presented Prince Abimbola Owoade with a Certificate of Appointment and Staff of Office as the new Alaafin of Oyo, despite ongoing controversy surrounding his selection.

The presentation ceremony took place at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office.

In his remarks, Governor Makinde emphasized the significance of the Alaafin’s stool to the entire Yoruba race, stating that it is not just important to Oyo Town or Oyo State.

He also addressed the controversy surrounding Owoade’s appointment, warning that individuals involved in attempts to destabilize the traditional institution in Oyo Town would face legal action.

“Those who are still hell-bent on destabilising our traditional institution in Oyo Town will be prosecuted over the money they collected unless they go and support the new Alaafin,” Makinde said.

He further made it clear that the throne was not for sale, stressing, “It is not a stool for us to toy with.”

The governor also denied any political interference in the selection process, stating that his administration would not engage in politics concerning governance.

He announced that the official coronation of Prince Owoade as Alaafin would take place in four weeks.

In his acceptance speech, Owoade expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde, the chiefs, and the people of Oyo Town for making his appointment possible.

He called for the support of all to help him rule effectively.

The state government had approved Owoade’s selection as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo on Friday, based on the recommendation of the Oyomesi, the kingmakers, through consultations and divination.

However, the appointment sparked controversy when five of the seven members of the Oyomesi rejected the decision.

In a letter addressed to the governor, signed by their legal representative, Chief Adekunle Sobaloju, the five kingmakers denied recommending Owoade and instead confirmed that they had nominated Prince Luqman Gbadegesin for the position.
