Army commissions Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment in Giri
In order to make army personnel more visible in responding to terrorist attacks, the Nigerian Army on Monday inaugurated new army cantonment known as Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment at Giri, on the Airport Road in Abuja.
Similarly, it simultaneously commissioned a locally fabricated Infantry Patrol Vehicles (IPV) to strengthen troops’ operations in the country.
The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali performed the groundbreaking ceremony in Abuja.
The Chief of Army of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai said that the vehicles were locally designed and fabricated after extensive research by army personnel.
He noted that they would further serve as motivating factor considering that efforts were on to clear remnants of Boko Haram terrorists in the North-East stressing that the vehicles had been deployed to the North-East.
National Daily learnt that during the 2017 Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship (NASAC) that was held at Sambisa Forest, the vehicles were used in fire power demonstration.
Buratai, while explaining the capability of the IPV, added that the vehicles could be used for long range battles as General Purpose Machine Gun – GPMG and other calibre of weapons could be mounted on them.
“The inauguration of the patrol vehicles is part of the overall strategy toward the establishment of a military industrial complex which is expected to be a major employer of labour when it takes off.’’
The Minister of Defence, Dan-Ali, had noted that the cantonment at Giri will provide living accommodation for officers and soldiers in the FCT
