The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following the controversial passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill by the National Assembly.

Reacting to the development on Wednesday, the spokesperson of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused the APC-led administration of actions he described as undermining Nigeria’s democratic foundations.

In a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Abdullahi expressed concern over what he termed a growing level of impunity by the ruling party.

He warned that such actions, if unchecked, could erode public confidence in the electoral process and threaten the country’s democratic stability.

“With this level of impunity, we pray that the APC does not become the death of our democracy,” he wrote.

The ADC spokesperson further alleged that despite the APC’s dominance across the states — with a majority of governors reportedly aligned with the party — it still appeared apprehensive about conducting elections that are free, fair, and transparent.

“Almost all the governors are in their party, yet they are afraid of a free and fair election,” Abdullahi stated, suggesting that the amendment could tilt the political playing field in favour of the ruling party.

He also cautioned that Nigerians would not tolerate any attempt to subvert democratic principles, stressing that the country had previously navigated similar political tensions.

“But Nigerians will never surrender to tyranny. We have seen this before,” he added.

The passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill has sparked debate among political stakeholders and civil society groups, with concerns raised over its potential implications for future elections.

While supporters argue that the amendment is necessary to strengthen the electoral framework, critics insist that certain provisions may weaken transparency and accountability in the democratic process.

As reactions continue to trail the development, political observers say the coming weeks may witness intensified engagements among parties, advocacy groups, and the executive arm of government over the future of Nigeria’s electoral reforms.
