A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State has announced the suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in a move that highlights growing internal divisions within the party’s state structure.

The decision was disclosed on Monday during a press briefing by the factional chairman, Raji Zumo, who said the action followed internal party deliberations involving key stakeholders within the state chapter.

Also affected by the suspension are former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and the party’s transition committee chairman, Sadiq Ibrahim. The development marks a deepening rift within the factional leadership of the party in the state.

Zumo did not immediately provide detailed reasons for the suspensions beyond referencing internal disciplinary processes, but the announcement has intensified tensions within the ADC’s Adamawa structure, where competing factions have been locked in struggles over leadership control and party direction.

The affected figures have yet to publicly respond to the suspension at the time of filing this report.

The ADC, like several opposition parties in Nigeria, has in recent times faced internal disputes across different states, often linked to leadership tussles, ideological differences, and preparations ahead of future electoral contests.

Observers say the latest development in Adamawa could further strain cohesion within the party if not swiftly managed through reconciliation efforts at the national level.
