Adeleke orders review of teenager’s death sentence for stealing chicken
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has intervened in the controversial case of a 17-year-old boy, Segun Olowookere, who was reportedly sentenced to death by hanging for stealing a fowl.
The governor’s decision follows widespread public outcry and an appeal from the boy’s parents, who described the conviction as unjust and overly harsh.
In a post on his X handle (@AAdeleke_01) on Tuesday, Governor Adeleke revealed that he has directed the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to investigate the matter thoroughly and initiate steps to grant Olowookere a prerogative of mercy.
The governor expressed his commitment to ensuring justice and fairness, stating that the case is being treated with the utmost urgency.
“I have received the report of a case of a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in Osun State for stealing a fowl,” Adeleke wrote.
“Consequently, I have directed the Attorney General to commence a full investigation into the matter and initiate processes to grant the prerogative of mercy to the young man. Osun is a land of justice and equity and must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives.”

The case gained attention after reports emerged that an Osun State High Court in Ikirun sentenced Olowookere to death by hanging for robbing his uncle’s poultry farm in Oyan, Odo-Otin Local Government.
The teenager was accused of stealing a fowl and eggs, a crime that led to the severe judgment. The sentencing sparked outrage, with many describing it as disproportionate to the alleged offence.
The boy’s parents have pleaded with the governor to intervene, emphasizing the minor nature of the crime and the devastating impact the sentence could have on their family.
In response, Governor Adeleke assured the public that the state government is committed to justice and equity.
“The matter is receiving my direct attention with every sense of urgency,” Adeleke added, promising to act before the end of the year to prevent a miscarriage of justice.
Legal analysts and human rights advocates have also weighed in on the case, criticizing the sentence as a violation of the principle of proportionality in justice. Many have called for a comprehensive review of the legal process leading to the conviction, with some suggesting systemic reforms to address such cases in the future.
