The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on residents of the South-South geopolitical zone to deliver the highest number of votes for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
The charge was made on Wednesday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Zonal Congress held in Asaba, Delta State, with all six South-South Governors in attendance.
Akpabio expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the APC for recognising the South-South after a 45-year absence from the Senate Presidency, recalling that the last Senate President from the region was Joseph Wayas. He emphasized the party’s efforts in the zone and the local population’s response by joining APC in increasing numbers.
“APC has treated us very well, and we have reciprocated by joining the party. Imagine, the last time we had a Senate President from this zone was Joseph Wayas, about 45 years ago. Now, under President Tinubu, the South-South is recognised, we are on the table,” Akpabio said.

He highlighted the growth of APC in the zone, noting that in 2023 the party had only one governor, the Cross River State Governor, but now all six Governors in the South-South are APC members. Akpabio urged delegates to ensure the zone delivers the highest votes nationwide for the party in the upcoming election.
“Now that we are complete and focused, the question is: What quantum of votes will the South-South give to the APC? Turn to the person beside you and challenge them. We must give the highest votes among the six zones in Nigeria,” he added.
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the host of the event, praised the growing unity and organisation of the APC in the South-South.
He said, “Today is not just another political gathering. It is a declaration that the APC in South-South is united, organised, and ready for the future. We must continue to deepen our unity, strengthen our structures in every ward and local government, and stay firmly connected to the grassroots.”
The congress concluded with the election, by consensus, of the new South-South Zonal Executive of the APC. Chief Victor Giadom was re-elected as South-South National Vice Chairman. Other members of the executive include: Dr Ita Udosen – Zonal Secretary; Hon. Barr. Safugha Newword – Legal Adviser; Dr Samuel Nwanosike – Publicity Secretary; Prince Koyoyo Uhrorho – Youth Leader; Hon. Sodangwuo Omoni – Women Leader; Hon. Prince Edward Ajang – Organising Secretary;Prince Ayo Peter Olowojoba – Leader, People Living with Disability.
The event signalled a strengthened APC presence in the South-South, positioning the zone as a key player in the party’s national strategy ahead of the 2027 elections.
