The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)has lost a prominent and consistent member in Akwa Ibom State, Senator Bassey Albert Akpan, representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly to the Young Progressives Party (YPP). The defection of Senator Bassey Albert Akpan to the YPP may not be unconnected with the alleged imposition of the PDP governorship candidate by Governor Udom Emmanuel on party members. Bassey Akpan had aspired for the PDP governorship ticket in Akwa Ibom State for the 2023 elections.

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah formally welcomed Senator Bassey Albert Akpan to the Young Progressives Party (YPP), describing his defection to the YPP as a welcome and formidable development.

Ubah in celebrating Bassey Akpan’s defection, declared: “It gives me great pleasure to welcome my Distinguished colleague and Senator representing Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, Sen. Bassey Albert Akpan, into the fold of the Young Progressives Party (YPP).

“Given our formidable antecedents as a party with an unblemished record and principle of participatory democracy, social justice and equal opportunities for all citizens, your entry into our great party is a significant milestone in the party’s quest to rebuild and strengthen YPP ahead of the 2023 General Elections and beyond.

“Having worked closely and seamlessly with you as your Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), I have an unflinching conviction that your joining the party will yield tremendous results.   Together, we will work to steer YPP to greater heights and realign our people to the moving train.”
