Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League crown suffered a major setback on Saturday after a shock 2–1 home defeat to Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium.

Manager Mikel Arteta watched on as his side missed the opportunity to move 12 points clear at the top of the table, instead slumping to a third defeat in four matches across all competitions at a crucial stage of the season.

The decisive moment came in the 74th minute when Alex Scott fired home the winner, stunning the home crowd and intensifying pressure on the league leaders ahead of next week’s potentially defining clash with second-placed Manchester City.

Arsenal’s defeat leaves the door open for Manchester City, who could cut the gap to six points if they defeat Chelsea on Sunday at Stamford Bridge. Crucially, Arsenal have played two more games than City, adding further intrigue to the title race.

The loss comes at a delicate moment for Arteta’s side, who are aiming to avoid a fourth consecutive runner-up finish in England’s top flight. Recent setbacks have disrupted their momentum, including defeats to City in the English League Cup final and to second-tier Southampton in the FA Cup — ending hopes of a potential quadruple.

Although Arsenal secured a 1–0 win over Sporting CP in the Champions League earlier in the week, the latest reverse raises fresh concerns about their consistency during the season’s decisive stretch.

Bournemouth made their intentions clear from the outset, taking the lead in the 17th minute when Junior Kroupi converted from close range following a swift attacking move.

Arsenal responded in the 35th minute after being awarded a penalty, which Viktor Gyokeres calmly dispatched to level the score. However, the hosts struggled to carve out clear-cut chances in the second half, with Bournemouth maintaining defensive discipline and threatening on the counterattack.

Scott’s clinical finish midway through the second half ultimately sealed a famous victory for the visitors, who have now recorded back-to-back league wins at the Emirates.

The result also marked a significant milestone for Bournemouth, extending their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 12 matches — a new club record.

For Arsenal, the defeat not only narrows the margin for error in the title race but also heightens anticipation for next week’s showdown with City, a match that could ultimately determine the destination of the Premier League trophy.
