Manager of Arsenal F.C., Mikel Arteta, has clarified why midfielders Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi were left out of the matchday squad for the club’s FA Cup fifth-round encounter against Mansfield Town F.C. on Saturday.

Both midfielders were notable absentees as the Gunners prepared to face the League One side, with Arteta opting for a heavily rotated lineup for the cup fixture.

The Spanish manager made nine changes to the team that secured a 1–0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. in the Premier League earlier in the week.

Among the few players retained in the starting lineup were defender Cristhian Mosquera and forward Gabriel Martinelli, who both kept their places in the side.

The extensive reshuffle also created opportunities for younger players, with teenage prospects Max Dowman and Marli Salmon handed starting roles for the cup tie.

Arteta explained that the changes were part of a strategic decision while also acknowledging the challenge posed by Mansfield, despite the gap in league status between the two teams.

“We know the difficulty of the challenge. It’s always really tough to win and earn the right to go through to the next round, and we are very, very aware of that,” Arteta said while addressing questions about the lineup changes.

The Arsenal boss stressed that every FA Cup match demands focus and commitment, noting that lower-league teams often rise to the occasion when facing top-flight opposition in the historic competition.

The fixture forms part of the fifth round of the FA Cup, as Arsenal seek to progress further in one of English football’s most prestigious knockout tournaments.
