The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Most Reverend Matthew Kukah, has raised urgent concerns over the unprecedented scale of killings in Nigeria, describing the situation as “unmatched anywhere else in the world.”

His remarks came on Monday in Yola, Adamawa State, during the launch of The Man They Could Not Stop, a book on Governor Ahmadu Fintiri authored by Solomon Kumangar.

“What is happening in Nigeria cannot happen in Sudan, Cameroon, Niger, Ghana, or any other country in the world,” Kukah said. He highlighted the alarming frequency of violence, noting,

“There is no other country in the world where 10 people are killed on Monday, 50 on Tuesday, 100 on Wednesday, and the killings go on every week. How can such a country move forward?”

Kukah criticized the framing of deaths along religious lines, accusing foreign media of inflaming divisions between Christians and Muslims.

He urged political and religious leaders to reinforce institutions that promote unity, national cohesion, and peace.

The bishop also lauded former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, for his intervention during the 2023 Adamawa governorship crisis, describing his role as vital to stabilizing the state’s political environment.

At the event, former Senate President Bukola Saraki called for prioritizing leaders with strong qualities over mere partisan loyalty, while Nassarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule encouraged Governor Fintiri to consider joining the APC.

Governor Fintiri, reflecting on the 2023 elections, described himself as a “man of destiny” and condemned what he called treachery and opportunism among political elites. He pledged that the people of Adamawa would continue to resist such forces.

The book launch drew prominent attendees, including governors from Bauchi and Nassarawa, Oyo State’s deputy governor, and representatives from several northern states.

APC Deputy National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, officially unveiled the book and urged residents to sustain their support for Fintiri’s developmental agenda.

The event underscored the intersection of politics, security, and governance challenges in northern Nigeria, with leaders calling for unity, institutional strength, and proactive measures to curb the country’s escalating violence.
