Brighton have piled more pressure on under fire Erik ten Hag after Manchester United misery rages on. The Red Devils’ dismal start to the Premier League campaign hit a new low at Old Trafford on Saturday. Roberto de Zerbi’s side inflicted another defeat on United to heap the pressure on Erik ten Hag.

Danny Welbeck opened the scoring after an energetic and bright start from United. The former Red Devils forward capitalised on some flat-footed defending to fire past Andre Onana.

United thought they had equalized before half-time when Rasmus Hojlund converted from close-range. But VAR ruled out the goal after Marcus Rashford ran the ball out of play.

Ten Hag’s side had enjoyed the better chances. Brighton however had carried a threat on the counter-attack. Pascal Gross continued his sensational record against United with a brilliantly taken goal ten minutes after half-time.

Hojlund who made his full debut for the club, was taken off just after the hour mark for Anthony Martial. The decision was met by jeers from the home crowd. The fans were furious that the Dane was leaving the pitch as the side looked for a way back into the game

The substitution had taken the sting out of United’s attack as Brighton scored a sensational third moments later. Joao Pedro finished off Tariq Lamptey’s cross to put the Seagulls in dreamland.

Some fans had seen enough and headed for the exits. Those that made a swift departure missed Hannibal Mejbri – who replaced Casemiro to less fanfare moments before Hojlund’s exit – score his first goal for the club with a brilliant effort from outside the box.

The goal gave United a flicker of hope that they could make a miraculous comeback but chances for a second were in short supply.

The defeat is United’s third in five matches, with the club’s form on the pitch matching the mood off it.

And Ten Hag can only hope for the ability to arrest the present undesirable situation at Old Trafford.
