Former Senator and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Ben Murray-Bruce, has expressed disappointment over Nigerian government buying of foreign-made vehicles for its officials when it could have got the vehicles from local manufacturers.

He noted it is a greater act of betrayal for government entities and political officeholders to persist in purchasing foreign-manufactured vehicles for official purposes when domestically-produced cars are available.

The former Senator also advocated for a revision of the Public Procurement Act 2007 to establish a requirement for government agencies to procure locally-made vehicles.

He conveyed the following message: “Reverting to defending the Naira with $1.5 billion monthly is a severe disservice to Nigeria.

However, the greater betrayal lies in our government’s continued procurement of foreign-made cars for officials, despite Innoson Motors being capable of fulfilling the demand.”

“As a private individual, you have the freedom to purchase whatever you desire with your own resources. Nevertheless, if you have a genuine affection for Nigeria, you should choose to support our nation’s products to strengthen the Naira – #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira.”

“On the other hand, as an elected or appointed public servant, our Ministries, Departments, and Agencies should procure products made in Nigeria as a mandatory responsibility.

“We should also explore the possibility of amending the Public Procurement Act 2007 to legally enforce this requirement.”
