Ademola Lookman, Super Eagles winger, has been crowned the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year, marking a triumphant comeback after a public setback four years ago.

Lookman, 27, received the prestigious award on Monday in Marrakech, Morocco, finishing ahead of Achraf Hakimi, Simon Adingra, Ronwen Williams, and Serhou Guirassy.

The Atalanta forward follows in the footsteps of Victor Osimhen, who won the award in 2023, cementing Nigeria’s growing influence on the continent’s footballing stage.

During his acceptance speech, Lookman reflected on a moment in November 2020 that haunted him for years.

Playing on loan for Fulham, he attempted an audacious Panenka penalty against West Ham United in the dying moments of an English Premier League clash. The poorly executed kick was easily saved by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, costing Fulham a critical point in a 1-0 loss.

The miss subjected Lookman to harsh ridicule on social media, and then-Fulham manager Scott Parker publicly criticized him.

“Just over four years ago, I failed in front of the world,” Lookman said. “Fast forward four years, I’m the best player in Africa.”

The Super Eagles star shared an inspiring message for young athletes facing adversity:

“I want to say to the young children and people watching this: don’t let your failures weigh you down so much that they break your wings. Matter of fact, turn your pain into your power and continue to fight.”

Lookman expressed gratitude to God, his teammates, and his country for their support.

“This award today is a blessing to me, to my family, to my nation. To be recognized as the best player in Africa is something incredible, and I’m extremely proud of it.”

Following his troubled spell at Fulham, Lookman’s career took a positive turn. He left the London club and joined RB Leipzig in Germany, where he began rebuilding his confidence and form. However, it was his move to Atalanta in the summer of 2022 that saw Lookman reach new heights.

Under Gian Piero Gasperini, Lookman became a talismanic figure for the Italian side, consistently delivering stellar performances in Serie A and European competitions.

His clinical finishing, creativity, and work rate helped Atalanta compete at the highest levels and cemented his reputation as one of Africa’s finest talents.

Lookman’s victory marks another significant achievement for Nigerian football, following Victor Osimhen’s CAF Player of the Year win in 2023.

The back-to-back awards underscore the rise of Nigerian footballers on the global stage, with Lookman and Osimhen leading a new generation of Super Eagles stars.

The winger’s story serves as a reminder of football’s unpredictability and the importance of perseverance.

From the disappointment of a missed penalty to being crowned Africa’s best, Ademola Lookman’s journey is a testament to resilience, hard work, and unwavering belief.

Lookman’s redemption is complete, and his success now shines as an inspiration for aspiring footballers across Africa.
