It was a black Wednesday for the officers and men of the Department of State Security (DSS) as nine officers were ambushed and killed by pipeline vandals in the notorious Arepo area of Ogun state.
The men were gunned down at the Konu village when they were responding to a distress call by a resident who had earlier informed the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) about the attack on their facility.
A source informed National Daily that many others sustained various degree of injury but nine of them died on the spot with their body recovered.
It was learnt that the vehicle they went with was still abandoned where they were ambushed in the early hours of Wednesday.
It was not immediately known how many DSS officers were involved in the operation. However, the source explained that they decided to call in the DSS because of “distrust” they have for the police to respond to urgent distress calls.
The 9 Brigade Commander Brig Gen AM Sabo who was said to be visibly disturbed had gone to the Nigerian Navy to seek for reenforcement due to the terrain of Arepo.
The DSS could not immediately be reached for reaction to the incident.
