Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has unveiled a bill to ban the purchase and sale of handguns. The proposed law, which was introduced in parliament by Trudeau’s Liberal Party on Monday, would not ban handgun ownership but would prohibit the sale, transfer, and import of handguns into Canada.
Trudeau said there is no reason for Canadians to need guns “in their everyday lives,” outside of hunting and sport shooting.
The proposed legislation would also require rifle magazines to hold no more than five rounds at once.
It would also take away gun licenses from people who are convicted of domestic violence or criminal harassment.
In 2020, following a mass shooting in Nova Scotia, the Canadian government banned the sale, transfer, and import of over 1,500 types of assault weapons.
This new handgun legislation was proposed following last week’s mass shooting at an elementary school in Texas.
