A 41-year-old Canadian lady Adrienne Munju was on Wednesday 23rd October 2024 convicted and sentenced to 11 years imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Lagos for importing 74 parcels of Canadian Loud, a strong strain of synthetic cannabis weighing 35.20 kilograms into Nigeria.
Munju’s conviction followed her arraignment on two counts charge before Justice Dehinde Dipeolu of a Federal High Court, Lagos by the NDLEA on Thursday 3rd October 2024 during the inward clearance of in-bound passengers on KLM flight at the ‘D’ Arrival Hall of the airport.

In her statement following her arrest she explained that she had been recruited to smuggle a shipment of illegal goods through an online platform promising her a payment of 10,000 Canadian dollars once the delivery was successfully made in Lagos. She mentioned that she accepted the offer mainly because she was in urgent need of money to cover the expenses of her master’s degree program in Canada which she was currently enrolled in and trying to finance.
Justice Dipeolu listened carefully to the case and ultimately decided to convict Muju based on the evidence presented to the court. After contemplating her situation and the implications of her guilty plea regarding the charges brought against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA he issued a sentence that included a term of imprisonment.
