Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has offered a detailed explanation for his recent decision to bench Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez ahead of Sunday’s high-stakes match against Manchester United.

Speaking to the British media, Maresca clarified that his decision is based on tactical requirements rather than any lack of confidence in Fernandez, emphasizing his commitment to the player and hinting at future opportunities.

“I still trust Enzo. There is not any reason in the world I can lose confidence in him,” Maresca told reporters.

“The reason he is not playing in the Premier League is simply because, at this moment, I’ve taken a different decision. My confidence in him is unwavering, and it’s just about what’s right for the team dynamics right now.”

Maresca explained that his current preference for fielding Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo in the midfield is driven by a need for “physicality and strength.”

He noted that both Lavia and Caicedo bring a certain defensive solidity and physical presence that allows the team to maintain balance, which becomes more challenging when Fernandez is positioned further forward.

“It’s a matter of balance. Romeo and Moi [Caicedo] give us physicality in the middle, which is why we explored the option of using Malo [Gusto] in a more central role.

“When Enzo plays, we tend to push him forward, and that sometimes leaves us vulnerable in the midfield. However, this doesn’t mean that Romeo and Moi are guaranteed to start every game.”

Maresca indicated that future matches could see different midfield configurations based on tactical needs and individual performance. “When one of them drops their levels, we’ll adjust. Each game requires a unique setup, and while Enzo isn’t starting now, he’ll undoubtedly have his moments on the pitch as we progress,” he said.

The coach also hinted at possible alternative lineups that could feature Joao Felix and Cole Palmer playing in advanced midfield roles, underscoring his flexible approach to Chelsea’s evolving tactics this season.

Maresca’s transparency on squad rotations reflects the adaptability he seeks to bring to Chelsea’s lineup, aiming to strike the right balance and form a resilient team as they navigate the rigorous demands of the Premier League.
