Chelsea are set to reap a significant financial windfall from the imminent transfer of Marc Guehi to Manchester City, thanks to a lucrative contractual clause in the defender’s deal when he moved to Crystal Palace.

The Crystal Palace captain, widely regarded as one of England’s top young defenders, is reportedly close to joining Pep Guardiola’s squad at the Etihad Stadium for the second half of the Premier League season and beyond.

City are keen to strengthen their defence as they chase Arsenal, who currently sit six points clear at the top of the table.

While Guehi’s transfer has dominated headlines as a major move for Manchester City, it is Chelsea who stand to gain significantly from the deal.

When the 24-year-old left Chelsea for Crystal Palace in 2022, the Blues reportedly inserted a sell-on clause into the transfer agreement. That clause entitles Chelsea to a substantial percentage of any future transfer fee received by Palace for the defender.

With Guehi’s move to Manchester City expected to involve a large fee, Chelsea are now positioned to collect a major payout—making them one of the biggest beneficiaries of the deal despite Guehi never returning to Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City’s interest in Guehi is believed to be driven by their current defensive injury crisis. The club has suffered a series of setbacks in their backline, leaving Pep Guardiola searching for reinforcements as the title race intensifies.

Guehi’s leadership and defensive stability have made him an attractive target for City, especially given his Premier League experience and strong performances as Crystal Palace captain.

If the deal goes through, it could have implications for the Premier League title race, as City aim to close the six-point gap to Arsenal. With the winter transfer window still open, Guardiola’s side is expected to push hard to finalise the signing quickly.

For Chelsea, the move represents a rare moment of financial gain from a player they developed but sold—highlighting the long-term value of smart contract clauses and youth development.

As the transfer edges closer to completion, all eyes will be on how much Manchester City will pay—and how much Chelsea will ultimately receive from the deal.
