A federal arts commission made up entirely of President Donald Trump’s own appointees has approved a 24-karat gold commemorative coin bearing his image to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary, an unprecedented move that breaks with longstanding convention and raises fresh questions about the boundaries between presidential authority and institutional norms.

The US Commission of Fine Arts voted without objection to advance the design at its March meeting, clearing the way for the US Mint to begin producing the coin ahead of the July 4 semiquincentennial celebrations. The coin’s final size, denomination, and production volume have not yet been determined.

The front of the coin features an image of Trump in a suit and tie with a stern expression, his fists resting on what is depicted as a desk as he leans forward. The word “LIBERTY” arcs across the top, with the dates 1776–2026 centred below it. “IN GOD WE TRUST” appears along the bottom edge, flanked by 13 stars representing the original colonies. The reverse side depicts a bald eagle in midflight with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” on one side and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on the other.

US Treasurer Brandon Beach endorsed the design enthusiastically. “As we approach our 250th birthday, we are thrilled to prepare coins that represent the enduring spirit of our country and democracy, and there is no profile more emblematic for the front of such coins than that of our serving President, Donald J. Trump,” Beach said.

Commissioners were equally effusive. Commissioner Chamberlain Harris, a senior White House aide, said: “I know it’s a very strong and a very tough image of him, and I think it’s fitting to have a current sitting president who’s presiding over the country over the 250th year on a commemorative coin for said year.”

The commission also weighed in on the coin’s physical dimensions. Commissioners debated the size of the coin, with several advocating for the largest possible format. The US Mint’s standard one-ounce gold coin measures approximately 1.3 inches in diameter, while its largest coins reach up to 3 inches. Harris invoked Trump’s known preferences when arguing for maximum size: “I think the larger the better. The largest of that circulation, I think, would be his preference.”

The approval is not without legal complexity. Federal law generally prohibits living presidents from appearing on US currency. However, Treasury officials said the Secretary of the Treasury has the authority to authorise certain commemorative coins outside of standard circulating currency. The coin still requires official approval from the Treasury Department, which takes into account the stances of both the Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, a federal panel with a wider range of members.

Critics and observers have characterised the move as another example of Trump embedding his name and likeness into the nation’s historical record, following his renaming of the US Institute of Peace, the Kennedy Center performing arts venue, and a new class of battleships, among other personal tributes.

This is not Trump’s first foray into the world of commemorative coins. He launched the $TRUMP meme coin during his second term and held a private dinner with 220 cryptocurrency investors in May that cost $1 million to attend, a move that drew bipartisan criticism on Capitol Hill. The commemorative gold coin is expected to be produced in a very limited run, with exact numbers still to be finalised as the Mint continues refining the coin’s specifications ahead of Independence Day.
