The FIFA World Cup 2026 will showcase the world’s finest talents, but the unforgiving nature of qualification means several elite players will not feature on football’s biggest stage.
From Africa to Europe, the qualification process has once again proven that reputation and individual brilliance offer no guarantees when national ambitions are on the line. For many stars, their absence is the result of collective team shortcomings rather than individual performance.
Here are some of the biggest names set to miss the tournament:
Nigeria
Top players including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi will be absent after the Super Eagles failed to qualify. Nigeria’s campaign was hampered by inconsistent performances, coaching instability, and dropped points against lower-ranked opponents, before a penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the play-offs.
Poland
Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski will miss out after Poland fell 3–2 to Sweden in their UEFA play-off final, ending their run of consecutive World Cup appearances.

Italy
A host of Italian stars, including Gianluigi Donnarumma, Alessandro Bastoni, Sandro Tonali, Federico Dimarco and Nicolò Barella, will also be absent. Italy’s failure to qualify for a third straight World Cup followed a penalty loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-offs.
Denmark
Manchester United forward Rasmus Højlund and veteran midfielder Christian Eriksen will miss the tournament after Denmark were eliminated by the Czech Republic on penalties following a 2–2 draw.
Cameroon
Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo is another notable absentee, with Cameroon knocked out after a 1–0 defeat to DR Congo in the African play-offs.
The absence of these players underscores the intense competition for World Cup places, where even globally recognised stars are not immune to the consequences of team failure.
