A Shari’a Court sitting at Magajin Gari in Kaduna State on Monday dissolved a 45-year-old marriage between Ilani Alhaji and Halima Ilani over allegations of infidelity.
The court’s decision came after the defendant, Ilani Alhaji, pronounced a divorce, following unsuccessful attempts at reconciliation.
The complainant, Halima Ilani, requested the court’s intervention to dissolve her marriage, citing ongoing accusations of infidelity by her husband, Alhaji.
She told the court that he had publicly accused her of cheating in front of their children, further straining their relationship.
“I have endured for 20 years as he failed to fulfill his duties as a husband. I stayed for the sake of our children, but now I am old and no longer have the energy to deal with these accusations. What hurts the most is being suspected of cheating,” Halima said. “I am no longer interested in this marriage.”
Halima went on to explain that despite her best efforts to keep the marriage intact for the sake of their children, her husband’s behavior and unfounded accusations had caused irreparable emotional distress.
She emphasized that she could no longer continue in a relationship filled with mistrust and accusations.
Judge Malam Anas Khalifa, in his ruling, confirmed the dissolution of the marriage after both parties failed to reach an agreement during several efforts at out-of-court settlement.
He acknowledged that the defendant’s pronouncement of divorce was valid and granted the dissolution as per Shari’a Court law.

The judge also noted that while efforts to reconcile the couple had been made, the situation had deteriorated beyond repair. “This is a case where trust has been severely broken, and it is clear from the evidence presented that both parties have reached an irreparable point,” he said.
The court’s decision reflects the complex nature of marital disputes in the region, where accusations of infidelity and failure to fulfill marital duties are often key factors in divorce cases.
It also underscores the challenges many couples face in maintaining long-term relationships amidst growing mistrust and emotional strain.
In his closing remarks, Judge Khalifa encouraged couples to prioritize communication, trust, and mutual respect, urging those in similar situations to seek counseling and mediation before resorting to divorce.
