The Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the final forfeiture of $4.7 million, N830 million, and multiple properties linked to the embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

The ruling, delivered on Friday by Justice Yellim Bogoro, marks a significant step in the ongoing legal battles surrounding alleged financial misconduct under Emefiele’s tenure at the apex bank.

The forfeiture was granted following an application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which had previously secured an interim forfeiture order on the assets.

The anti-graft agency argued that the funds and properties in question were proceeds of unlawful activities and should be permanently transferred to the federal government.

EFCC counsel Bilkisu Buhari-Bala informed the court that the forfeited funds were held in various bank accounts managed by individuals and corporate entities.

According to the commission, the financial assets were traced to accounts in First Bank, Titan Bank, and Zenith Bank, operated by individuals and organizations including Omoile Anita Joy, Deep Blue Energy Service Limited, Exactquote Bureau De Change Ltd, Lipam Investment Services Limited, Tatler Services Limited, Rosajul Global Resources Ltd, and TIL Communication Nigeria Ltd.

In his ruling, Justice Bogoro upheld the EFCC’s application for final forfeiture, affirming that the agency had provided sufficient evidence to prove that the funds were connected to illicit financial activities.

The judge further stated that no substantial opposition had been presented against the forfeiture request, thereby justifying the assets’ transfer to the federal government.

The decision comes amid heightened scrutiny of Emefiele’s tenure at the CBN, with multiple allegations of corruption, financial mismanagement, and abuse of office.

The former CBN governor has been at the center of various investigations, including allegations of unauthorized financial transactions and preferential treatment in foreign exchange allocations.

With this ruling, the EFCC has reinforced its commitment to tackling financial crimes and recovering illicitly acquired assets. The commission has vowed to continue its investigations to ensure accountability and transparency in Nigeria’s financial sector.

Meanwhile, legal representatives of the affected parties have not publicly responded to the court’s decision. It remains to be seen whether any appeals will be filed against the ruling.

This forfeiture represents another milestone in the Nigerian government’s broader efforts to combat corruption and recover misappropriated public funds.

As the case against Emefiele and other implicated individuals continues to unfold, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how justice is served in this high-profile financial scandal.
