The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja has opened a full-scale investigation into the unexplained withdrawal of military personnel from the Government Girls’ Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State—an action that occurred less than an hour before armed bandits invaded the school and abducted 26 students.

A top military source confirmed that all soldiers previously deployed to protect the school have been recalled to Abuja for questioning. The probe seeks to determine who authorised their withdrawal and why it occurred despite intelligence reports warning of an imminent attack.

“The military personnel who were stationed at the school have been summoned to Abuja for interrogation. They reported on Monday. We are following the case closely,” a senior government official said, adding that the Kebbi State Government is awaiting updates from federal authorities.

Another high-ranking military officer, who was not authorised to speak publicly, revealed that the investigation had been expanded to include everyone involved in the school’s security arrangement.

“Anyone found culpable will definitely be brought to book,” the officer said, stressing that the outcome of the inquiry would be decisive.

The Kebbi State Government has, however, distanced itself from the probe. The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris, stated that the matter is solely under the control of the Defence Headquarters.

“The Defence Headquarters is handling the matter. We expect them to take necessary action, but we are not involved in the interrogation,” he said.

Governor Nasir Idris earlier described the timing of the troop withdrawal as deeply troubling, especially since the state had received intelligence suggesting a possible attack.

According to him, soldiers were deployed following an emergency security meeting, but withdrew from their duty post at about 3 a.m. By 3:45 a.m., bandits launched their assault.

Community leaders share similar concerns. The District Head of Maga, Muhammad Dantani, said the military had previously been part of a strong security presence that deterred attacks. On the night of the incident, however, the troops reportedly left their position shortly before the bandits struck.

“That is the biggest and most disturbing question,” Dantani said. “We still don’t know who gave the order or why they withdrew.”
