Diaspora Commission reveals first set of Nigerians evacuated from Sudan arrives Friday

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, at the 70th session of the weekly ministerial briefing at the State House, Abuja, disclosed that the first set of Nigerians evacuated from Sudan will arrive in Nigeria through Egypt on Friday.

According to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, “barring any last minutes changes, the first set of Nigerian evacuees from Sudan are expected to arrive in Nigeria on Friday”.

The NIDCOM Chief Executive Officer disclosed that 13 buses departed two universities in Khartoum, conveying Nigerian students to the Aswan border in Egypt, where they will be airlifted to Nigeria.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey  Onyema, speaking earlier on Channels Television monitored from Lagos by National Daily, said that some Nigerians were among the foreign national evacuated through a ship that arrived Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

Dabiri-Erewa was cited to have said that more Nigerian students would be evacuated from Sudan and would arrive Cairo, Egypt later on Thursday evening.

She said that “13 buses of about 60 people have already left. We are hoping that they would get into as one later this evening, but we are monitoring them. It is not a very pleasant situation; mission officials are waiting to receive them.”
