While several notable Nigerians from the Christian and Muslim sides have been condemning the gruesome killing of Deborah Samuel, Dr. Aliyu Tilde the Bauchi State Commissioner for Education has condemned the statement that the deceased made that was interpreted as blasphemy
The late Deborah Samuel was a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto. She was flogged and stoned to death and afterward, her body was set ablaze by a mob who accused her of blasphemy. Dr. Aliyu in his post on Facebook didn’t support nor condemn her killing, however, he asserted that any normal human being will agree that the statement that she allegedly made which was interpreted as blasphemy was provoking.
Dr. Aliyu who translated the statement (which was in Hausa) into English cautioned parents to teach their children to respect others for the sake of peace.
The brutal murder of Deborah is highly reproachable and we hope those responsible for her death will all be apprehended and made to face the law. However, we should also learn to respect the religion of other people so that we can coexist in peace.
