The operatives of the Ebonyi police command have arrested a 22-year-old rapist in the most unlikely for suspects of such nature.
Miracle Onwe, an indigene of Ezzamgbo in Ohaukwu LGA, has been a person of interest for a while before he finally swam into the police dragnet at a river side community, Aboffia, Ebonyi LGA.
According to the command’s PRO Chris Anyanwu, Onwe attacked the victim, a 22-year-old lady working on her farm.
The predator pounced on her from the back, brought her down, and raped her. Onwe didn’t stop there; he took her phone, and fled.
“When the girl raised the alarm and drew the attention of passers-by who went after him, the suspect dived into a nearby river with the phone,’ the spokesman told journalists in Abakaliki on Thursday.
The last time the criminal did it to a pre-teen in another community, he dived into the same river.
The water was troubled this time.
“On getting the information, SP Mustapha Waheed, the DPO C Division Ekumenyi swung into action with his detectives,’ he said.
“The area was cordoned, and the suspect was drawn out from the river and arrested.”
Onwe confessed to the crime.
Both victim and suspect were taken to FETHA for post-exposure prophylaxis and laboratory tests, which confirmed the rape.
Onwe is in custody, ad will be arraigned, police said.
