A magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck near the northwestern Turkish city of Bursa on Wednesday, sending noticeable tremors across Istanbul, a metropolis of 16 million people. While the quake caused some panic, particularly in its epicenter, there were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties.
The Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located near the town of Gemlik, approximately 80 kilometers (about 50 miles) south of Istanbul.
The tremor was distinctly felt on both the Asian and European sides of Istanbul, prompting concern among residents who are acutely aware of Turkey’s seismic vulnerability.
Broadcaster Habertürk highlighted the panic in Gemlik, noting that the town had experienced two other moderate quakes just a day prior, on Tuesday.
These recent seismic activities underscore the region’s susceptibility to earthquakes.
Turkey is situated on highly active seismic fault lines, making it prone to frequent tremors, some of which are severe.
Experts have consistently warned about the high probability of a major earthquake, potentially exceeding magnitude 7, striking the densely populated Marmara region, which includes Istanbul.
However, Wednesday’s 4.4 magnitude quake did not occur on the critical main fault line that runs just off Istanbul’s coast.
This particular fault line is widely expected by seismologists to be the trigger for a long-overdue magnitude 7 or greater earthquake that could have devastating consequences for the city.
The latest tremor follows a stronger quake measuring 6.2 that shook Istanbul in April, further adding to concerns over the city’s seismic preparedness and the potential impact of a larger event.
