ECOWAS sanctions Guinea over coup

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the end of its extraordinary meeting in Axccra, Ghana, on Thursday, sanctioned Guinea, placing travel ban on the country currently under military rule, and freezing the financial assets of coup leaders and their families.

ECOWAS leaders directed the military Junta to conduct elections within six months, ensuring that no military leader participates or contests in the elections.

ECOWAS Heads of States appealed to the continental government, the Africa Union (AU), and the global organization, the United Nations Organization, as well as   international partners of the West African sub-regional group, to align in enforcing the travel bans and financial sanctions against the military junta in Guinea and their families. T

ECOWAS, however volunteered to assist Guinea in the transitional process.

ECOWAS leaders further demanded immediate and unconditional release of the overthrown President of Guinea, Alpha Conde.
