In a scathing critique of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, former Edo State spokesperson John Mayaki has described the candidate as the “antithesis of his own campaign slogan.”

Mayaki’s remarks cast doubt on Okpebholo’s suitability to lead Edo State, as he questioned the candidate’s personal credibility and leadership abilities.

Speaking ahead of the September 21 gubernatorial election, Mayaki accused Okpebholo of lacking the stability and integrity required to lead a state as diverse and dynamic as Edo.

He alleged that Okpebholo’s personal life reflects a man ill-equipped to manage his own affairs, let alone the governance of an entire state.

Mayaki’s criticism extended to Okpebholo’s family life, a topic that has sparked speculation in recent weeks. He claimed the APC candidate has faced challenges maintaining relationships, citing allegations of two failed marriages.

Mayaki highlighted the absence of Okpebholo’s wife in public appearances and pointed to a recently surfaced photograph showing one of his wives and children, notably excluding Okpebholo himself.

Describing Okpebholo’s household as “cold and devoid of familial warmth,” Mayaki alleged that the candidate’s inability to sustain personal relationships reflects poorly on his capacity to foster unity and leadership.

He questioned how someone unable to manage harmony in their personal life could be expected to unify and lead Edo State effectively.

Invoking a biblical reference, Mayaki quoted, “But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith and is worse than an infidel.”

He used this to underscore his argument that Okpebholo’s perceived failures in his private life undermine his credibility as a leader.

Mayaki did not hold back in his criticism of Okpebholo’s campaign slogan, calling it “empty rhetoric.” He argued that the slogan contradicts the reality of the candidate’s life and leadership potential, suggesting that Okpebholo himself is in need of assistance rather than being in a position to uplift Edo State.

Mayaki’s remarks are likely to intensify scrutiny of Okpebholo’s candidacy as the election draws nearer. He urged voters not to be swayed by campaign promises, warning that leadership requires a foundation of personal integrity and stability.

“Edo State cannot rise under Monday Okpebholo,” Mayaki declared. “The people deserve a leader who embodies the values of unity, accountability, and progress – qualities that Okpebholo has consistently failed to demonstrate.”
