The Edo State House of Assembly on Monday passed the 2025 state budget of N675 billion, setting the stage for it to be forwarded to Governor Godwin Obaseki for his assent.

The passage followed the adoption of the report from the House Committee on Budget and Project Monitoring during a plenary session in Benin City.

The report, presented by the committee’s chairman, Sunday Fada (PDP, Esan Central), revealed that the budget consists of N225 billion allocated for recurrent expenditure and N451 billion for capital expenditure.

Fada explained that the committee’s decision to increase the budget was driven by the need to accommodate Governor Obaseki’s five-point agenda for the state, which focuses on key sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security.

The committee had initially considered a budget proposal of N605.7 billion, but after thorough deliberations, the figure was revised upwards to N675 billion to support the expanded scope of the governor’s plans.

Following detailed discussions and a clause-by-clause review in the Committee of Supply, the House approved the revised budget.

The Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, in her remarks, directed the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Omogbai, to immediately prepare and send clean copies of the approved budget to the governor for his final approval and assent.

The passage of the 2025 budget marks a significant step in the state’s fiscal planning and paves the way for the implementation of various developmental projects aimed at improving the lives of Edo residents.
