The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced an official investigation into former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, and 15 other current and former senior officials of the state-owned oil firm over allegations of misappropriation of funds and abuse of office.

Also under investigation is Abubakar Yar’Adua, another high-ranking executive of the company. Other NNPCL officials reportedly on the EFCC’s radar include Ibrahim Onoja, Mustapha Magaji, Isiaka Abdulrazaq, Umar Aliya, Dikko Ahmed, and Ademoye Adeniyi Jelili, among others.

This development follows the recent shake-up in the NNPCL leadership, which saw President Bola Ahmed Tinubu relieve Mele Kyari of his position as Group CEO on April 2, 2025. Bashir Ojulari was appointed as his successor.

The EFCC’s request for documentation was formally conveyed in a letter dated April 28, 2025, and addressed to the new NNPCL Group CEO.

The letter, which became public on Saturday, requests certified true copies of the emoluments and allowances of the listed individuals, whether they are currently serving or have retired from the company.

“The Commission is investigating a case of Abuse of Office and Misappropriation of Funds in which the under-listed officials of your organisation featured,” the EFCC wrote. “In view of the above, you are kindly requested to furnish certified true copies of their emoluments and allowances, including that of those who have retired and no longer work with your organisation.”

While details of the specific allegations have not been publicly disclosed, sources suggest that the EFCC’s probe centers on multi-billion-naira transactions and questionable financial practices that occurred during Kyari’s tenure.

This move signals a broader anti-corruption drive within the petroleum sector under President Tinubu’s administration. It also marks a significant test for the credibility and transparency of NNPCL following its transition to a commercially driven entity in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

As of press time, NNPCL has not issued an official statement in response to the EFCC’s request.
