EFCC probes Anambra trader over alleged N192,000 fake currency at Awka market

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Enugu Zonal Directorate, have commenced investigation into the activities of a 31-year-old trader, Oduburu Lucy Oluchi, also known as Eze Chiamaka Lucy, over alleged possession of counterfeit currency amounting to N192,000.

Oluchi was arrested on December 23, 2025, at Eke Nibo Market in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State after fellow traders reportedly apprehended her while she was attempting to purchase goods with suspected fake notes.

Following her arrest, she was handed over to the Agunechemba Quasi Security Outfit (Vigilante), which subsequently transferred her to the Department of State Services (DSS) for preliminary investigation.

The EFCC confirmed that it received the suspect from the DSS on December 29, 2025. Upon taking custody, operatives reportedly discovered that she was in possession of counterfeit N1,000 notes totaling N192,000, bearing six different serial numbers.

According to the Commission, 25 of the notes carried serial number A/33 334233; 30 notes bore serial number B/33 334432; 51 notes had serial number A/83 353504; 43 notes showed serial number A/29 894433; 42 notes carried serial number A/29 894434; while one note bore serial number A29/898248.

The alleged offence contravenes Section 151 of the Criminal Code as well as Sections 4 and 5 of the Counterfeit Currency (Special Provisions) Act.

The anti-graft agency stated that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
