Fake soldier gets bail for extortion

A fake soldier who was accused of impersonation and extortion was on Wednesday granted bail by a Grade 1 Area Court at Karu in Abuja.
The accused impersonator, Godwin Sunday, 25, who resides at Durumi in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was granted bail in the sum of N20, 000.
Even though he pleaded not guilty to the charges, the offences are punishable under Sections 132 and 292 of the Penal Code.
The Prosecutor, Helen Ashasim, explained to the court that the case was reported to the Karu Police Station by one Mercy Sunday also a Karu resident on July 25.
National Daily learnt that the accused person has been impersonating as an army officer, while using the uniform to intimidate, exhort and harass people.
The prosecutor, Ashasim further stated that the defendant was arrested along the Kugbo-Nyanya Expressway in the FCT while extorting money from drivers and motorcyclists.
The Judge, Mr Hassan Ishaq, who granted the defendant bail ordered that the surety must be residing within the jurisdiction of the court; submit his driver’s licence or national identity and passport photographs with the court.
The case was adjourned to August 21, 2017.
