The Nigerian government has issued a travel warning for citizens planning to visit the United Kingdom due to escalating violence following the tragic killing of three young girls at a concert.

In a travel alert released on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ref. No: MFA/PR/2024/14) cautioned Nigerians about the dangerous turn of events in the UK, including reports of attacks on law enforcement officers and damage to infrastructure. The alert advises extreme caution for travelers to the UK.

The advisory urges Nigerians in the UK to remain vigilant and avoid political processions, protests, rallies, marches, crowded areas, and large gatherings. It highlights the increased risk of violence and disorder resulting from recent riots and disturbances.

The alert reads: “There is an increased risk of violence and disorder occasioned by the recent riots in the UK, stemming from the killing of 3 young girls at a concert. The violence has assumed dangerous proportions as evidenced by reported attacks on law enforcement agents and damage to infrastructure.

“To this end, citizens are advised to be extra vigilant and take measures as follows: Avoid political processions and protests, rallies or marches. Avoid crowded areas and large gatherings. Be vigilant and self-aware at all times.”

The Nigerian government also provided contact information for the High Commission for those needing assistance or wishing to report information. It noted that recent demonstrations by far-right and other extra-parliamentary groups have been large and occasionally unruly.

The disturbances have been exacerbated by the deaths of the three girls, fueling anti-immigration sentiments, particularly targeting Muslim immigrants and people of color.

The advisory remains under review.
