FG pledges support for gender equality in workplace policy

The Federal Government pledges it will support initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality in workplace, including empowering women.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, at a high-level stakeholders’ advocacy meeting in Abuja on the Validated Nigeria Workplace Gender Policy”, said the policy is a significant milestone towards advancing gender equality and social inclusion in workplaces.

The meeting was organised by the Ministry of Labour and Employment in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Oxfam Nigeria.

Kennedy-Ohanenye, represented by the Director of Gender Affairs, Adamu Web, stressed the importance of the policy in fostering gender equality in workplaces across the country.

The minister said the initiative would lead to safer work environment free from harassment through active participation of stakeholders.

“The Ministry of Women Affairs remains committed to supporting initiatives that promote gender equality and empower women particularly in relation to this critical workplace policy.

“This meeting sought to raise awareness of the workplace gender policy among federal ministries and ensure its smooth passage at the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

“The policy ultimate goal is to create a safe and inclusive work environment for all Nigerians,” the minister said.

Olaolu Olaitan, Director of Inspectorate, Ministry of Labour and Employment, said gender equality unlocked the skills and perspectives of both men and women.

She explained that gender mainstreaming considered the differences between men and women and addressed human implications of the differences.

“When we avoid gender discrimination in workplace, we can increase productivity and alleviate conflicts,” she said.

Also, Helen Akinyemi, Programme Manager, Gender Justice, Oxfam Nigeria, said collaborative efforts would ensure successful approval and implementation of the policy.

She called for continued support from ministries and development partners to achieve a future where workplaces are inclusive and gender-neutral.

The President of Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifo, said the validated National Workplace Gender Policy marked a significant milestone in the collective journey toward achieving the goal of safe and inclusive work environment for all.

“We pledge our support and solidarity in implementing this policy; ensuring that our workplaces become beacons of equality; where every individual can thrive regardless of gender.

“Together, let us foster a culture of mutual respect, understanding and empowerment,” he said.
