Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the developmental interests of the state as the driving force behind his decision.

In a statewide broadcast on Friday, Fintiri announced that he was joining the APC alongside his entire cabinet and key officials of the PDP structure in Adamawa State.

According to the governor, the defection was motivated by the need to align Adamawa State more strategically with the federal government to accelerate development initiatives and improve access to national resources.

He stated that the move followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders, community leaders, and members of his administration, adding that the decision was taken in what he described as the “best interest of the people of Adamawa State.”

While details of the political negotiations leading to the switch were not disclosed, sources within the state government indicated that the transition process had been underway for weeks.

Fintiri’s defection marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Adamawa State, traditionally considered a stronghold of the PDP.

The development comes amid a wave of high-profile defections to the ruling party. Recently, the Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, as well as his counterparts in Kano and Plateau states — Abba Yusuf and Caleb Muftwang — also announced their decision to join the APC.

Political analysts say the growing trend of defections could significantly alter party dynamics ahead of future electoral contests, strengthening the APC’s control in key states while raising fresh questions about the stability of opposition platforms.

As of press time, national leadership of both the APC and the PDP had yet to issue formal statements regarding Fintiri’s defection.

Observers expect the move to trigger realignments within Adamawa’s political structure, with implications for legislative representation, party leadership, and grassroots mobilisation across the state.

Further details are anticipated as political stakeholders react to the governor’s announcement and outline the next steps in consolidating the transition.
