Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has accused the immediate past Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of creating adversaries for President Bola Tinubu during his tenure, describing his removal as a consequence of “karma.”
Speaking to journalists following the announcement of Egbetokun’s replacement, Adeyanju said public office holders must exercise caution in their dealings with Nigerian citizens, noting that power is temporary.
“Egbetokun inherited so many enemies for his principal, President Bola Tinubu. As a public office holder, you should know that you will never be in power forever,” he said.

He further stated, “Karma has come for Malami, El-Rufai, and Egbetokun. Karma is going to come for many of them that will soon be out of government. We must always be circumspect when dealing with citizens. Many of them, like Egbetokun, used their offices to victimize people.”
The comments come shortly after President Tinubu on Wednesday decorated Tunji Disu with the rank of acting Inspector-General of Police, succeeding Egbetokun.
During his tenure, Egbetokun faced strong opposition from activists and members of the public, who alleged that he had illegally occupied the office and criticized some of his decisions as unfair and heavy-handed.
Adeyanju’s remarks highlight ongoing debates around accountability, transparency, and the conduct of senior officials within Nigeria’s security and governance institutions.
