Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State on Tuesday resumed demands on the federal government for the establishment of a Development Commission in the South East.

Governor Umahi, at the inauguration of new executives of the Southeast Traditional Rulers Council, in Abakaliki, decried that several legislative efforts in the past on the establishment of a development commission in the southeast failed. The governor told the traditional rulers and other stakeholders in the southeast to join in the demand for Southeast Development Commission.

Governor Umahi pointed out that the establishment of the Southeast Development Commission will not only help to harness the commercial potentials of the region but will also stimulate overall development in the southeast.

Currently, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was set to oversee the development of the oil producing states in the south-south. The NDDC has, however, been expanded to cater for the development needs of some states in the southeast identified as oil producing states.

The North East Development Commission was later established to handle development in the northeast following the Boko Haram terrorists devastation of the region.

The southeast being troubled by Biafra agitators, the southwest also troubled by the Yoruba nation agitators and the northwest being ravaged by bandits are yet to get a development commission.
