Group condemns killing of truck driver by police, petitions Sanwo-Olu

Council of Maritime Transport Unions and Associations have condemned the senseless killing of a truck driver in Mile 2 area of Lagos state allegedly by a Lagos State Task Force team on patrol.

There was uneasy calm at the Mile 2 area of Lagos as Tanker drivers and touts engaged in a free for all fight on Tuesday.

According to witnesses, some persons were killed as a result of the clash between the Lagos Task Force, tanker drivers, and touts at Mile 2.

In a petition to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, National president of COMTUA, Adeyinka Aroyewun, said the sad incident has not only taken the life of an individual but has also sent shockwaves throughout the transportation community.

“We firmly believe that every worker, regardless of their profession, is entitled to a safe working environment. It is essential that law enforcement agencies and government bodies take immediate and decisive action to ensure the safety and security of all transport workers in Lagos.

“We implore you to thoroughly investigate this incident, bring the perpetrators to justice, and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

“In light of this tragic event, we urge all stakeholders, including the truck drivers and their unions, to remain calm and composed during these challenging times. It is crucial that we maintain peace and solidarity while allowing the appropriate authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this matter.

“We encourage everyone to exercise restraint and avoid engaging in any retaliatory acts that may further escalate tensions.

“We believe that a collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies, government officials, and transport unions is essential to create a safer working environment for all.

The group said the Council of Maritime Transport Unions and Associations stands in solidarity with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased truck driver during this difficult time.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to them and assure them of our support and commitment to justice. Thank you for your attention to this matter. We trust that you will take appropriate action to address our concerns and work towards improving the safety and security of the transportation sector in Lagos.”
