A storm of controversy has erupted across Nigeria following remarks by Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Abubakar Gumi, who alleged that the Federal Government possesses detailed intelligence on terrorists’ identities and locations but has failed to act decisively.

Gumi’s assertion, made during a recent television interview, has reignited long-standing suspicions among many Nigerians about the government’s handling of the country’s protracted insecurity crisis, which has claimed thousands of lives over the past decade.

According to the cleric, his engagements with armed groups were never conducted independently but in coordination with security agencies, including the police, military, and intelligence services. He insisted that authorities are well-informed about the operations of terrorist groups across the country.

“The government knows every terrorist by name and by location. I don’t go alone to negotiate, I go with the police, military and other security agencies,” Gumi stated.

He further disclosed that some of his peace missions took him into remote forests and communities, sometimes involving traditional leaders and local residents, including women, as part of efforts to broker dialogue with armed groups.

Gumi’s comments have triggered widespread reactions, with many Nigerians expressing anger and disbelief. For some, his remarks validate a long-held belief that the government may not be doing enough—or worse, may be complicit—in addressing insecurity.

Others referenced the famous remark by former Head of State, Sani Abacha, who once said that any security breakdown lasting beyond 48 hours should be blamed on the government. That statement has resurfaced in public discourse as citizens question why insecurity has persisted for years.

However, a segment of the population continues to defend the government, arguing that authorities are deploying all available resources to combat terrorism under difficult and complex conditions.

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, alleged possible collusion between elements within government and criminal groups.

“Gumi is not lying. All these terrorists are in beds with people in the government… it is because they have their phone numbers,” Sowore said.

Similarly, veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, echoed concerns about leadership failure, accusing authorities of complicity in the ongoing violence.

On social media, reactions ranged from disbelief to outright condemnation. While some users questioned the absence of an official response, others described the claims as evidence of systemic failure and lack of accountability.

Gumi, known for advocating negotiation with armed groups, defended his approach as complementary to military operations. He argued that dialogue remains a necessary tool in resolving conflicts that have deep social and economic roots.

Observers note that his stance highlights the complexity of Nigeria’s security challenges, where reliance on military force alone may not yield lasting solutions. However, critics warn that such engagements risk legitimising criminal groups if not handled transparently and within a clear legal framework.

Beyond domestic reactions, analysts warn that Gumi’s comments could carry international consequences. Foreign affairs expert, Dr. James Abaranje, suggested that such revelations might attract increased scrutiny from global powers, particularly the United States.

He pointed to the aggressive counterterrorism posture of Donald Trump, noting that statements implying government inaction despite intelligence could influence foreign policy decisions regarding Nigeria.

Abaranje cautioned that if the perception takes hold that authorities are aware of terrorist networks but unwilling to act, it could justify external intervention or intensify international pressure on the Nigerian government.

While no official response has yet clarified the government’s position on the cleric’s claims, the controversy has once again spotlighted the urgent need for transparency, accountability, and a coherent strategy to end the country’s persistent security challenges.
