After two years, the House of Representatives eventually passed a bill blurring the difference between the Higher National Diploma and Bachelor of Science in Nigeria.
Honourables Ali Isa and Edward Pwajok, sponsors of the two-year-old bill, said Tuesday there was segregation when it comes to employment issues because “those having first degrees (university graduates) are placed on Grade level 8, while those having HND are placed on grade level 6 or 7”.
The bill, the National Daily gathered, wants to end perceived discrimination against polytechnic graduates (HND holders) and remove the challenges they face, especially those in the public service.
It is already taking effect in some ministries—like the ministry of interior which supervises Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Prisons Service and Federal Fire Service.
But this might not change anything in the private sector.
Big corporations like Shell and others, by policy, put HND holders and third-class university graduates at the same level.
Pwajok in his lead debate said this “discrimination” against the polytechnic graduates “had no moral justification”.
According to him, the discrimination reflects in salaries as some organisations pay degree holders N100,000 at entry level, with HND holders are paid N70,000.

yes I support they should pls remove the differences and consider the polytechnic.indeed most of the student withdrawal from poly to university.students learn more from polytechnics.you cannot compare someone that spent five years program with three years program.kudos to house of Reps!

Comment:Congratulations, that is right after all this effect is commensal to Bsc holders. it will never affect their salary any where even when they are in thesame office with HND holder. so it’s a perfect move so that every service graduate will be treated just fully in any working place. nice development and a boost to polytechnics as an institution.

Comment:Thats true, but in the private sector HND graduates r equated to 3rd class graduates from a university.. for example when u go for PGD as a distinction student, u sit in class with 3rd class student willing to upgrade for masters.. if u r a HND graduate, play safe by going for ur Bsc.. that wld go a long way.. cheers

The should also consider the mode of entry in the universities and polytechnics. You don’t give 200 for university and 150 for polytechnic, after one had waited for five years before meeting the high grade demand of the universities to acquire Back, you now equate it with HND. Is not fair at all. Let them correct it from Jamb.

Good work done after all the standard of learning in polytechnic institutions is not different from that of the universities or if not better.

Comment: after all politicians with secondary or forgings certificate are busy twisting the country anyhow, while someone is there discriminating a genuine certificate just because it bear HND. by record HND holders are more industrious in this country. kudos to the sponsors of the bill

it will not work, as far as engineering society is concerned. university learn management while polytechnic learn hand work, engineers learn maths skill while poly learn hand skill, that is the law of engineering society, professors cannot allow this
