The British police has continued to withhold details of their charges upon which Nigeria’s former Deputy President of  the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife are being detained in the United Kingdom (U.K.) by the met police and denied bail on Thursday. However, a letter requesting visa for a kidney donor for the senator’s daughter has leaked in less than 24 hours of the detention.

The leaked letter indicated that Ekweremadu formally applied to the British High Commission in Abuja, requesting visa for a 21 years old man, kidney transplant donor, to his daughter.

The letter, which was dated December 28, 2021, signed by Ekweremadu, designated Senator representing Enugu West in Nigeria’s National Assembly.

The letter clearly specified the purpose of the donor and Ekweremadu’s daughter going to the U.K for medicals at the Royal Free Hospital, London. Ekweremadu clearly volunteered to fund the medical trip to the U.K.

There were insinuations are that the donor may be 15 years of age; but a purported medical information provided indicated 21 years. However, this was not the basis for which the British Met Police charged Ekweremadu and his wife to court. Rather, they were accused of plotting organ harvest.

The medical mission failed on arrival in the U.K., after it was discovered that the kidney of the donor did not match with the kidney of the recipient. The donor, therefore, resorted to blackmail the senator, alleging organ harvest as a means of claiming persecution to seek asylum in the U.K. and avoid returning to Nigeria.

The Metropolitan Police had arrested Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, on Thursday, accusing them of arranging travel of a child to the UK for organ harvesting.

On arraignment at the Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court, the senator and his wife were denied bail. The court ordered their remand in custody till July 7 when the case comes up for hearing.

Senator Ekweremadu’s letter is presented below for sighting, while the U.K. Metropolitan police is being awaited to give the details of their investigation.
