IBB University mourns 300-level student as tragic death sparks gambling concerns

The management and student community of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Niger State, are mourning the death of a 300-level Computer Science student, Kelvin Danlami, in a tragic incident reportedly linked to gambling-related challenges.

According to reports, Danlami died on Monday, January 19, 2026, following complications arising from the alleged mismanagement of N150,000 entrusted to him for house rent, which was reportedly lost through gambling activities.

Authorities have not released further details on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the university, in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Comrade Aliyu Abubakar, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and the entire university community.

The SUG described Danlami’s death as a profound and irreplaceable loss, not only to his immediate family but also to the Department of Computer Science and the university at large.

“On behalf of the entire student community of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, friends, the Department of Computer Science, and all students of the University over this great and painful loss,” the statement read.

The union also prayed for comfort and strength for the bereaved family and colleagues during the difficult period, urging students to support one another in moments of distress.

The incident has renewed concerns within the university community over the growing impact of gambling among students and the pressures associated with financial difficulties.

Stakeholders have called for increased awareness, counselling, and support services on campus to help students manage stress, financial challenges, and potential addiction-related issues.

Students and staff have continued to pay tribute to Danlami, describing him as a member of the academic community whose death has left many shocked and saddened, while calls intensify for preventive measures to avert similar tragedies in the future.
