A Kano State High Court, on Tuesday, sentenced one Salisu Idris to death by hanging for the gruesome killing of a family of three by arson.
Idris, whose age was not disclosed, resided in Gayawa Quarters, Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State.
He was charged with abetment and culpable homicide.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu ruled that the prosecution had successfully established its case beyond reasonable doubt.
“I hereby sentence Idris to death by hanging for burning the victims alive,” the judge declared.
According to the prosecution, led by Counsel Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, the incident occurred on September 25, 2019, at about 2 a.m., when Idris and an accomplice, Aliyu Abdullahi-Anas—who remains at large—set the residence of one Aminu Bala ablaze.
The fire led to the tragic death of Bala, aged 50, his wife, and their two-year-old child.

The prosecution presented two witnesses and tendered Idris’s confessional statement as evidence in court.
Despite the statement, Idris denied committing the offence.
The crime contravenes Sections 85 and 221 of the Penal Code.
The defence, represented by Mr. Mustafa Hussaini, called Idris to testify in his own defense, but the court was not convinced.
The judgment marks a significant moment in the fight against violent crime in the state.
