The Kebbi State Government on Wednesday donated 376 matresses and other items to students of Nana Asma’u Government Girls’ College, Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area of the state, who were affected by fire.

The National Daily recalls that a students’ hostel in the school was gutted by fire on Monday night where matresses and other belongings of the students were completely burnt.

Commiserating with the staff and students, Gov. Atiku Bagudu said ”even though there was no loss of life, the entire hostel had been razed”.

Bagudu, who was represented by the Chief of Staff, Alhaji Suleiman Mohammed-Argungu, said: “His Excellency, Sen. Abubakar Bagudu is very much concerned about what happened.

”And that’s why he ordered for an immediate action to cushion the effect of this ugly development.

“He has been away for a national assignment, but gave the directive that 376 matresses, uniforms, foodstuff and many other things be supplied to the college.

”’This gesture is not meant to pay you back what you have lost, but to alleviate your suffering.

“Even though the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, I want to urge you, both staff and students to be very vigilant.

”This is to ensure that all electricity appliances are switched off before going to bed.”

He assured that tailors would be contracted to saw both the uniform and personal wrappers for the affected students.

Presenting the items, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Babale Umar-Yauri, said the governor was seriously concerned about the unexpected development

He listed some of the items supplied to include uniforms, blankets, wrappers, mosquito nets, buckets, cartons of indomie, cups, plates, sachets of Maggi cubes and detergents.

While commiserating with the students, Umar-Yauri charged them to use the items judiciously.

In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary School Education, Alhaji Muhammad Magawata-Alieru, said the state government had initially planned to build two blocks of hostels in the school, but with the present development, it would build three.

He noted with satisfaction that the school was selected to benefit from a Federal Government/United Nations project on Girl Child Education.

The Chairman, Dandi Local Government Council, Alhaji Abdussalam Jibril, expressed appreciation to Bagudu for his prompt intervention.

“Gov. Atiku Bagudu-led administration is known for prompt action in the event of any happy or sad development, not only in Dandi, but across the state.

”It therefore gladdens my mind that the governor always rush to identify with his people.

“When the incident happened yesterday, I called the governor on phone to inform him of the inferno, but he told me that he was already at the airport, but on reaching Abuja he will give me a call.

“Immediately after his arrival, he called me to get the details of what happened, after narrating, he asked me the immediate needs of the school and I told him.

”We are grateful to God Almighty and we are also grateful to him for his prompt response,” he noted.

Receiving the items, the Principal of the College, Hajiya Sa’adatu Mohammed, thanked the governor for what she described as a kind and immediate response.’
