The Lagos State Government has approved a three-month rebate window for motorists to replace faded, damaged or unreadable vehicle number plates, as part of renewed efforts to enhance road safety, strengthen security architecture and improve vehicle identification across the state.

The initiative, approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), Mr Rasheed Muri-Okunola, who described the policy as a proactive, citizen-focused intervention aimed at encouraging compliance while easing the financial burden on vehicle owners.

Muri-Okunola explained that clear and legible number plates play a critical role in effective traffic management, crime detection and overall public safety, noting that worn-out or faded plates often hinder the operations of traffic officers and law enforcement agencies.

According to him, the rebate period is designed to give motorists adequate time to replace deteriorated plates at a reduced cost, while contributing to safer and better-regulated roads across Lagos State.

“This three-month rebate gives motorists ample opportunity to replace worn-out number plates at a reduced cost, while supporting the state’s efforts to ensure safer roads and enhanced security,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary clarified that the rebate applies strictly to vehicle owners whose number plates have become unreadable over time due to prolonged use and exposure to harsh weather conditions.

He advised affected motorists to visit the MVAA One-Stop Centre in Oshodi or any MVAA office across the state to complete the replacement process.

Muri-Okunola noted that the programme underscores the state government’s commitment to balancing enforcement with empathy, promoting voluntary compliance through incentives rather than penalties.

He added that beyond aesthetics, readable number plates are essential for reducing traffic violations, supporting security investigations and improving the effectiveness of Lagos State’s digital vehicle tracking and security systems.

“This is not just a regulatory exercise; it is a public safety initiative,” he stressed, assuring motorists of efficient and seamless service delivery throughout the rebate period.

He also cautioned vehicle owners against patronising unauthorised agents, emphasising that all number plate replacements must be carried out strictly at government-approved centres.

Reaffirming the administration’s people-oriented approach to governance, Muri-Okunola urged residents to take advantage of the rebate and cooperate with the government in building a safer, more accountable and orderly transport system in Lagos State.
