In a dramatic turn of events, the Lagos State House of Assembly has temporarily shut down operations and directed all staff and legislative aides to work remotely until tensions arising from the ongoing leadership crisis are resolved.

The directive was issued via an internal memo by the Acting Clerk of the House, Babatunde Ottun, on Sunday, signaling the severity of the crisis engulfing the state legislature.

The internal memo, titled “Amendment to Remote Work Schedule Arrangement,” emphasized that the move was necessary to ensure the safety of legislative staff and prevent potential violence linked to the leadership dispute.

“To this end, all categories of staff at the Assembly, LAHASCOM, and legislative aides are requested to work remotely from home until further notice. This measure is necessary pending the resolution of the leadership dispute,” the memo read.

The statement further reassured workers of the commitment of the newly appointed Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, to their safety and a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has been in turmoil following the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, and former Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, by 32 lawmakers on January 13.

Their removal led to the appointment of Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker, sparking internal tensions and factional disagreements within the legislative body.

While the Assembly has yet to disclose a clear roadmap for resolving the impasse, political observers note that the ongoing crisis could significantly impact legislative activities in the state.

The indefinite nature of the remote work directive raises concerns about governance disruptions and the passage of critical bills.

As the leadership struggle continues, the Assembly’s ability to function effectively remains uncertain. The indefinite suspension of physical operations underscores the urgency of finding a resolution to the crisis.

The question on everyone’s mind is: how long will this impasse last, and what will be the fate of legislative governance in Lagos State?
